Fall ride, part IV
Yesterday was colder than today. When I left for Chambéry after lunch, it was about 7 degrees Celsius (almost 45 Fahrenheit).
Not only was the temperature slightly higher today, but also I was better prepared. Although I couldn't fit a hat underneath my helmet, I wore a windbreaker with a hood. I also wore a pair of very thin gloves under my normal cycling gloves. Finally, I wore windbreaker bottoms, too.
The difficulty today was the wind. Actually, I was lucky to have gone yesterday morning. The wind picked up later in the day and has been blowing down the valley from the north since then. Getting to Chambéry was hard work.

Yesterday (Sunday) I took a long ride. I ended up going to Hanna which is just on the south side of US 30. Computing from the county map, it was 49 miles (79 km) round trip. My cyclometer stopped registering early in the ride and I may have broken it trying to adjust it without tools -- will have to see if I can repair a cracked piece of plastic. It was 44 degrees when I left at 11 AM and in the upper 40's when I finished. My feet were better because I wore a pair of thin socks cover by a pair of double layer running socks, covered by plastic bags.
I received an order from Performance today so will not have to use the plastic bags again (I am not sure they worked very well.) I got a pair of neoprene shoe covers. I also got a trainer and will have to see if that makes me want to ride inside instead. Also, in a few more weeks there will be very, very few days that are reasonable for riding outside (to me that means at least 40 degrees when starting, dry roads, winds below 15 MPH.)

Hope you enjoy your shoe covers. Mine aren't perfect, but they made a big difference.
Sounds like you're building up to something. You aren't planning to ride across the US during the winter, are you?
